Relaxation of Two-Dimensional Visco-Elasticity in a Long Chain Fatty Acid Monolayer Expanded at the Air/Water Interface

Two light scattering techniques developed for surface wave spectroscopy by the authors were used to study the two-dimensional visco-elastic properties in a mono-molecular film of tetradecanoic acid spread on a water surface. The spectra of the surface viscosity and elasticity obtained in the 10 kHz-1 MHz range revealed, as the first instance of such an observation, a relaxation which is widely distributed around 100 kHz. Moore and Eyring's theory of surface viscosity is useful for describing the present results, and its prediction for the relaxation frequency was consistent with the above value.
