Local structure of AgOx thin layers and its modification upon thermal annealing and optical initialization have been studied. We found that, depending on the O2/Ar gas-flow-rate ratio, layers of AgO and Ag2O can be produced. Annealing of both layers at 450°C leads to their decomposition into metallic Ag. Annealing of AgO at 160°C is found to strongly depend on heating rate and annealing time. The optical initialization of AgO layers may cause their partial decomposition (${\sim}5$%) into Ag2O.
