Self-Assembly and Oriented Structures on Surface of Substrates for $\pi$-Conjugated and Coplanar Polythiophenes with –C$\equiv$CR Substituents

Head-to-head-type poly(3-alkynylthiophene-2,5-diyl), HH-P3(C$\equiv$CR)Th, showed a UV-visible absorption peak at about 520 nm, which is shifted to a longer wavelength from that of head-to-head-type poly(3-alkylthiophene-2,5-diyl), HH-P3RTh ($\lambda_{\text{max}}$ = ca. 390 nm). HH-P3(C$\equiv$CR)Th exhibited a strong tendency to self-assemble. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) data of HH-P3(C$\equiv$CR)Th supported the formation of a stacked structure in the solid. The XRD data indicated that the HH-P3(C$\equiv$CR)Th molecules in films formed on the surface of substrates were aligned on the surface of the substrate.
