Synthesis of Carbon Nanofibers by Ion beam Irradiation of an Aromatic Compound

Cabon nanofibers (CNFs) were synthesized at room temperature without a catalyst by the ion beam irradiation of an aromatic compound: CNFs with a length of 1–10 μm and a diameter of approximately 100 nm were generated by the irradiation of decacyclene with 200 keV He+ or N+ ions. The number density and length of the CNFs depend on the fluence and species of the ions. Observations by transmission electron microscopy indicate that the CNFs were amorphous.
