The compound 2-naphthol and a surfactant AOT have been found to be gelled in nonpolar solvents by self-assembly. The gel can be applied to an emitting organogel by UV excitation. NMR spectroscopy revealed that 2-naphthol has a stacked structure in which naphthyl π–π overlap is maximized, and the exterior of this structure is surrounded by AOT. This organogel emits blue light under UV excitation due to dense stacking of the 2-naphthol framework. When a Eu3+ complex exhibiting orange emission was dispersed in the gel, pinkish-white emission was observed because of an additive color-tuning of the gel body and the Eu3+ complex dispersed in it.
