We analyzed two-dimensional connectivity of bubbles in pumice clasts in a rhyolitic pyroclastic flow from Onikobe volcano. Connectivity is defined as the ratio of the pixel number of the largest pore cluster to the total pixel number of pores in the BSE images, which approximates the percolation probability. The connectivity–vesicularity relation records the local and continuous foam–collapse process in the pyroclastic flow eruption, suggesting that magma foaming was suppressed at limited bulk vesicularity by a series of processes involving heterogeneous foaming, local and successive fragmentation of the foam with permeable gas flow, aggregation and welding of the fragments of bubble-wall melt, and continuous melt dehydration from the welded lumps.
