The recovery process from rounded to faceted morphology of NaClO3 crystals has been observed <I>in situ</I> using a specially designed cell which can be used with temperature control of 1/100°C. A seed crystal is dissolved at first to a rounded form, and then by changing temperature of the solution to growth temperature, the process of recovery is observed. In the initial stage of growth, {100}, {110} and {111} develop as flat faces with their centres depressed. As recovery proceeds, {110} and {111} faces are gradually replaced by the {100} faces. The regions of the rounded surface whose tangents are indexed as higher indices are recovered by the kinematic steps from the neighbouring flat faces such as {100}. Crystals eventually become cubic bounded by {100} faces alone. Growth rates in the directions perpendicular to (010), (140), (120) and (110) were measured to establish the basis for further studies on growth mechanism from solution phase.
