Photoconductive properties of surface-type cells with a pure zinc oxide layer were observed. These properties depend upon the thickness of zinc oxide layer. As zinc oxide layer becomes thin, the dark current decreases but the photocurrent remarkably increases. At the same time the photoresponse becomes slow in inverse-proportion to the photocurrent itself. The relation between the photocurrent and the light intensity is also affected by thickness of zinc oxide layer. The saturation of the photocurrent is observed at weak light intensity and overshoot and undershoot of the photocurrent are remarkable in the thick layer of zinc oxide.These phenomena observed were considered by using a simple model taking into account of thickness effects on the photoconductive properties such as Dember effect and carrier trapping. Overshoot and undershoot may be brought about by photoadsorption of oxygen at the particle surfcae of zinc oxide.No complete explanation has been yet obtained for the experimental results. The modelused may be too simple.
