An evaluating system has been developed for the abrasion resistance of yarns. In this system, the elongation of the yarn during the abrasion test is absorbed by the introduction of one-way clutches. And the system is especially designed in order that the actual part of the yarn subjected to friction can be kept at the same location during the abrasion test.<BR>This system has been applied to the two kinds of spun yarns made of polyester fiber. The frictional force between the yarn and the frictional pin and the number of cycles to wear out depend both on the wrap angle of the yarn around the frictional pin, θ, and on the tensile force applied to the yarn, W. However, the dissipated frictinal energy for the yarn to wear out is practically independent of θ within that the range ; 76°≤ θ≤105°, and also independent of W when the frictional pin of 5 mm Φ is used. These results indicate the abrasion resistance of yarns can be estimated more effectively by the frictional energy. The frictional energy can be estimated precisely by the system developed here.
