Resume
The authors observed the behaviour of lubricating oils, dropped into a bearing fitted with “oil-less” hearing materials now on the market, and compared it with that of the oil . dropped into a gun-metal bearing.
Using oleaginous bakelite, wood, grow cast iron and gun-metal for the bearing metal, we observed the axial velocity and the thickness of the film of the soybean oil dropped into the bearing.
The results obtained are as follows :
(1) From the stand point of the variation of the axial velocity of the lubricating oils, the authors opinion is that the accepted theory concerning the axial distribution of the bearing pressure should be reconsidered.
(2) With oleaginous bakelite the axial velocity of the oil is very small. Between the other three materials there is no appreciable difference.
(3)In the case of gun-metal the thickness of the oil film is exceedingly thick. For the other three materials decreases in the order of grow cast iron, oleaginous wood, and bakelite.
(4) Before and after lubrication, the rotational velocity varies some what. The rate of variation decreases in the order of gun-metal, grow castt iron, oleaginous wood and bakelite.
