A large number of papers have been published on the grinding of the usual machine parts. But on the grinding of the card clothing we have very few literatures. So we have tried to grind the wire cloth with an ordinary metal working grinder, and observed the following :
(1) When the grinding depth is between 3/100 and 15/100mm, the grinding is completed in about five or six times, and about 50% of the total depth is ground at the first grinding.
(2) Though the knee angle of the wire is nearly constant irrespective of the grinding condition, the angle the top face makes with the wire center line varies considerably. It seems that, when the grinding wheel pushes the top of the wire, it is the foundation cloth and not the wire itself that is principally strained.
(3) The roughness of the grinding wheel has certain effects on the roughness of the top face. therefore it is inadvisable to use too rough grinders,
(4) Considering the dimension of the card drum and the conditions of the clothing, it seems difficult to specify "the gages" in thousendths of an inch.
