The magnitude of tension acting on the filling yarn when it is pulled out from a bobbin during weaving is an important factor which influences much upon the weaving efficiency and the texture of the fabric, particularly upon the defects caused by some trouble in rayon filling yarn. The authors measured the tension when filling yarn is pulled out, making use of magneto-striction tensometer, and investigated the effect of the large package bobbin. The 120 denier rayon filling yarn is pulled out with a tension below its elastic limit, but the variation in filling tension is smaller when a large package bobbin is used. Empirical formulae for the filling tension are derived.<BR>The magnitude of the filling tension measured is larger than that calculated due to the increase of the resisting force caused by the fluffs of the yarn and by the inside walls of the shuttle. The quality of the fabric is affected by the filling tension when beating up takes place, rather than by the filling tension when filling is pulled out from the bobbin.
