The effects of molding condition on thermal and mechanical properties of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene have been investigated. The molding process using a piston cylinder method was analyzed, and the mechanical and thermal properties of the molded samples were measured . As a result, we obtain the following conclusions. The melting point, heat of fusion, and density of the molded sample are changed with molding pressure. Especially, the change is marked at about 300MPa ; this pressure is correspondent to a transition from folded chain crystal to extended chain crystal. The same change can be also seen in the stress vs. strain curves, the strage modulus vs. temperature curves, and the loss modulus vs. temperature curves.Further, a marked dependence of molecular weight on the mechanical properties described above can be seen on the smaples molded above 300MPa.
