The polymer liquid flows are known to become unstable at high shear rates. To clarify these phenomena, we visualized the flow near a channel junction and measured fluid velocity with a laser-doppler velocimeter. These instabilities are characterized by two circulating secondary flows near the junction becoming larger and smaller periodically and alternatingly. The time period of oscillation is a function of the fluid flow rate, the concentration of a polymer solution and the ratio of channel width to exit width.Similar instability is observed with one entrance blocked. The flow, however, is not periodic in this case.
