Important factors to characterize mechanical properties of fabrics were selected by applying principal component analysis. Using these factors, how to classify characteristics of fabrics was investigated. In this paper, cotton, linen, silk and man-made fiber shirting fabrics were used as typical thin fabrics, and worsted and woollen suiting fabrics were used as typicalthick fabrics.
Measurable items on mechanical properties of fabrics, such as tensile, bending, shearing and compressive properties, thickness and weight, are summarized as seven or eight factors. Particularly, items obtained from tensile, bending and shearing hysteresis curves are summarized as five or six factors for resistive and elastic properties.
Each group of cotton, linen, silk and man-made fiber fabrics can be distributed according to bending and shearing resistive factor, while each group of worsted and woollen fabrics can be distributed according to bending and tensile resistive factor.
To classify each group of fiber material types, the discriminant equations were derived from three measurable items, i. e., tensile elastic modulus, bending and shearing rigidity. It was found from coefficients of the equations that bending rigidity is the most important.
