The clinical efficacy, usefulness and safety of cefozopran (CZOP), a new cephem antibiotic for injection, was investigated in 8 patients with bacterial respiratory tract infections.
The diagnosis of these patients was bacterial pneumonia in 3, lung abscess in 1, chronic bronchitis in 1, pulmonary emphysema with infection in 2 and DPB in 5.
Cefozopran was given in a daily dose of 0.5-2 g by drip for 30-60 minutes intravenously, for 12 to 23 days, with the total administrated dose ranging from 14 to 46 g. Clinical efficacy was rated as excellent in 2, good in 5 and poor in 1.
Bacteriological effect was determined to be eradicated in 3 strains and unchanged in 2. Adverse reactions were observed in two patients. They included nausea, apetite loss, a sensation of abdominal inflation, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Abnormal laboratory findings were eosinophilia in 2 case and increases of GOT values in 1. From these studies it can be concluded that cefozopran is an effective and useful antibiotic for bacterial respiratory tract infections.
