MEROPENEM IN CHRONIC COMPLICATED URINARY TRACT INFECTION

We evaluated meropenem (MEPM), a new carbapenem, for clinical efficacy, utility and safety in the treatment of chronic complicated urinary tract infection. The following results were obtained.<BR>1) MEPM was clinically evaluated by the attending doctors as excellent in 5, good in 11, fair in 1 and poor in 3 cases. By the Japanese UTI Committee's criteria, it was evaluated as excellent in 4, moderate in 8 and poor in 7 cases, the efficacy rate being 63%.<BR>2) Bacteriologically, 15 (65%) of 23 strains were eradicated.<BR>3) No side effects due to MEPM were observed, but among laboratory findings, elevation of s-GOT, s-GPT, ALP, and direct bililubin were observed in 4 patients, and slight eosinophilia was observed in 1 patient.
