Meropenem, a new carbapenem antibiotic for injection, was administered to 6 patients with pulmonary infection (pneumonia 4, diffuse panbronchiolitis 1, chronic bronchitis 1). The clinical response was excellent in 2 cases and good in 4. Bacteriologically, 4 strains of 3 species (Streptococcus pneumoniae 2, Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum 1, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 1) were detected as causative bacteria in 4 cases, and 3 of these strains except P. aeruginosa were eliminated.
Although none of the patients developed side effects, elevation of S-GOT and S-GPT was found in 2 cases, elevation of LDH in one, and increased eosinophils, elevation of LDH and decreased platelet count in one. Although changes in laboratory values were rather frequent, viz. in 4 of 6 patients, all were slight and transient.
