The following results were obtained by conducting an epidemiological study of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolated from 1977 onward.
1. We confirmed that MRSA were isolated in our institution beginning in the latter part of 1970 s.
2. A high percentage of the MRSA isolated between 1977 and 1983 were type IV for coagulase type, but type II increased to include a high proportion of MRSA isolated from 1984 onward, confirming the reports of many researchers.
3. A high proportion of MRSA isolated in recent years reacted negatively with benzylpenicillin (PCG) substrate, suggesting that many of these strains lack the ability to produce β-lactamase altogether or produce it in only small amounts.
4. The PCG substrate reaction by the acidimetry method revealed a negative correlation with MIC values of methicillin (DMPPC) and cefmetazole (CMZ) but a positive correlation with the MIC value of ampicillin (ABPC).
