Gentamicin, a new highly inhibitory antibiotic for gram-negative and gram-positive organisms, was administered to 7 cases of suppurative diseases of the eye with favorable results in 5 cases. In most of these cases topical instillation of ophthalmic solution or ointment of 0.3% gentamicin and subconjunctival injection of 10∼20 mg gentamicin were performed so that high intraocular penetration was rapidly obtained.
Serum and aqueous levels of genatamicin were determined with Bacillus subtilis following systemic or topical administration in the rabbit eye. A higher intraocular penetrarion was obtained by topicl administration than by systemic, especially in the previously paracentetic eye.
