Cefodizime, a new cephem antibiotic, was applied to the treatment of twenty patients with respiratory tract infections.
The drug was administered by i.v. drip infusion, mainly at 2 g/day, divided into two doses, for 4-14 days.
The results were: excellent in 9 cases, good in 6, ineffective in 3 and unknown in 1, and not evaluable in 1 (mycoplasma pneumonia). The 3 ineffective cases were far advanced bronchiectasis with symptomatic aggravation caused by P. aeruginosa 1, obstructive pneumonia with lung cancer 1, and 1 very old patient with pneumonia. No pathogenic agents were isolated in the last 2 cases. Another case was excluded because of ARDS complicating pulmonary tuberculosis on day 4 of treatment.
Stomatitis was observed in one case, but was thought to have no correlation with this drug. Serum GOT, GPT and for Al- P elevated slightly during chemotherapy in 3 cases, whose pretreatment values were already elevated. These recovered soon after cessation of chemotherapy.
We consider this drug useful for treating respiratory tract infections, except for infections due to P. aetuginosa.
