CLINICAL STUDIES ON BRL 28500 (CLAVULANIC ACIDTICARCILLIN) IN THE SURGICAL FIELD

BRL 28500, a formulation of ticarcillin (15 parts) and clavulanic acid (1 part), was administered intravenously at a dose of 3.2 g per day for 5-7 days to 7 patients with surgical infections comprising three with postoperative wound infections and 4 with intraabdominal infections.<BR>The results were as follows:<BR>1. The clinical effect was good in 4 cases, fair in to and poor in one.<BR>2. Bacteriologically, 4 of 8 strains were eradicated.<BR>3. The clinical results in two patients with <I>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</I> infection were fair in one and poor in one. Bacteriologically, one strain decreased in number and the other persisted.<BR>4. No side-effects were observed.
