Fundamental and clinical studies on BRL 28500 (clavulanic acid-ticarcillin) were carried out in the field of ophthalmology and the following results were obtained.<BR>1. The MIC90, of BRL 28500 and TIPC against <I>E. agglomerans</I> isolated from infectious eye disease were 25μg/ml. The MIC90 of BRL 28500 against <I>S. aureus</I> was 6.25μg/ml and one of TIPC was 50μg/ml. The MIC90 of BRL 28500 against <I>S. epidermidis</I> was 6.25μg/ml and one of TIPC was≥100μg/ml. Antibacterial activity of BRL 28500 against Staphylococci is superior to one of TIPC.<BR>2. High concentration of TIPC in tear and low concentration of TIPC in aqueous humor were detected after intravenous administration of 50 mg/kg BRL 28500 in rabbits and serum concentration of TIPC in rabbit peaked 30 minutes after administration and the peak serum level was 30.5μg/ml.<BR>3. BRL 28500 was administered 1.6 g t. i. d. to one patient with ulcus corneae serpens and its clinical effect was effective. As for side effect, clinical symptoms were not observed.
