Netilmicin is one of semi-synthesized aminoglycosides developed in the U. S. A. MICs of netilmicin and gentamicin against 99 strains of gram-negative rods including 27 strains of E. coil, 27 strains of Proteus mirabilis, 18 strains of Serratia marcescens and 27 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were measured by agar dilution method with bacterial inoculation of 108/ml and 106/ml. Antibacterial activities of netilmicin against these bacterial strains seemed to be inferior to that of gentamicin. Serum levels after giving 100 mg of netilmicin to 3 healthy adult volunteers were measured by double layers cup method. A peak of the serum level reached 6.1μg/mL 15 minutes after the dosing. Urinary recovery rate till 8 hours marked 46.1% and the maximum excretion in the urine was proved first 2 hours. With regard to clinical results of netilmicin giving 200 mg per day for five days on 14 cases of chronic complicated UTI, overall clinical efficacy was estimated to be 21.4%; excellent in one case, moderate in two cases and poor in eleven cases according to judgement by UTI criteria recommended by Japanese UTI committee. No subjective adverse side-effect was observed, but slight decrease of peripheral leucoyte count was marked in one case. No abnormality of blood chemistry associated with the administration of the drug was found.
