Strains highly resistant to ampicillin were investigated for their sensitivity to carbenicillin and β-lactamase activity employing ampicillin and carbenicillin as substrates. Among them two strains were found infected with R factor carrying penicillin resistance marker and potent to produce highly active penicillinase (β-lactamase). These two strains and E. coli K-12 or Proteus mirabilis PM-1 received R factor (Rpc) are highly resistant to carbenicillin. However, penicillinase produced by these organisms hydrolyze carbenicillin at much slower rate than ampicillin. Other strains investigated were sensitive to carbenicillin and found producing less penicillinase though they were highly resistant to ampicillin.
Ease of entry of the drug through accessibility barrier of bacteria is proposed as adv antage of carbenicillin over ampicillin.
