The early Miocene basalts and basaltic andesite and middle Miocene dolerite from the Pohang-Yangnam area are high alkali tholeiite and peralkalic rocks on Si02-alkali diagram respectively. Basalts plot in MORB field, while basaltic andesite plots in the island arc tholeiite field on Fe0*/MgO-Ti02 diagram. MORB-normalized spidergram for basalt show the island arc basalt signature and that of alkalic dolerite is similar to that of Nb-rich alkalic basalt from the Oki-Dozen area regarded as within-plate basalt. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns for the basalts are similar to that of the high alkalic tholeiite (JB-3) and REE pattern of alkalic dolerite is higher than that of the alkali basalt (JB-1). On the εNd-87Sr/86Sr diagram, tholeiitic basalt (No. 2) and alkalic dolerite (No. 3) plot in mantle array and near those of Miocene to Quaternary basalts from the North Kyushu and South Chugoku areas. Therefore, basaltic rocks from the Pohang-Yangnam area are considered to have been derived from the same source material as that of the Miocene to Quaternary basalts from the North Kyushu and South Chugoku areas.
