Effect of 4G-.BETA.-D-Galactosylsucrose(Lactosucrose) on Intestinal Flora and Its Digestibility in Human.

Lactosucrose (LS-98) was hardly hydrolyzed by an in vitro digestion method . No significant changes were observed in either the blood glucose or serum insulin level in normal adults after intake of LS-98. The hydrogen gas was excreted after a 30-min lapse from ingestion of LS-98. These results indicated that LS was nondigestible carbohydrate and available for the substrate of fermentation by intestinal bacteria. LS was selectively utilized by Bifidobacterium except for Bifidobacterium bifidum. The number of Bifidobacterium increased significantly during administration of LS-55. The ratio of Bifidobacterium to the total counts reached nearly 70-90%.
