Kaolin-montmorillonite mixed layer minerals were synthesized from montmorillonite and the montmorillonite containing aluminium hydroxy polymers by hydrothermal treatments. The mixed layer minerals thus formed showed following characters on their X-ray line profiles;(1) The basal reflection of the first order appeared at lower angle than that of the peak of well crystallized kaolinite. (2) The basal reflection of the second order appeared at higher angle than that expected from the angle of the first order reflection. (3) Both the reflections were shifted to lower angle side by E .G. treatment. (4) By heating below 400° the reflection of the first order shifted to lower angle side, whereas the reflection of the second order to higher angle side. The characters mentioned above can be explained by the assumption that the mixed layer minerals consist of three kinds of layers, kaolin, montmorillonite and dehydrated montmorillonite. Comparisons of the observed X-ray line profiles withthe calculated ones based on the structure model of the three compoment system were made, and a good agreement between observed and calculated line profiles was shown.
