For the purpose of further utilization of woody bioresources, novel deformation processing was contrived by noting the fluidity of wood via share-induced slipping off between fiber cell walls. Conventional compressive deformation processing using a single axial press involves several disadvantages such as limitation of multi-axial deformation and long-time (several hours) processing. In contrast, shear-induced deformation that we have developed enables short-time processing and flexible, three-dimensional large deformation by using a roll press and fibrous woody particles as a raw material. A versatile design of woody materials with various shapes were successfully achieved via extrusion and injection molding method under the adequate conditions that moisture content, temperature and pressure were controlled.
