Background: In an aging society, we often treat the extreme aged patients with severe heart failure (HF). Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is one of the important options for treatment of severe HF. But there is few informations about CRT for the aged patients. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of CRT on the aged patients with severe HF. Methods: We implanted 60 biventricular pacemaker from August 2007 to May 2011 in our hospital. There were 12 CRT patients who were 80 years and over. We retrospectively investigated the clinical characteristics and outcomes of the patients. Result: Mean age was 83.3 years-old (81–87), and female gender was 9 (75%). Underlying heart diseases were as follows, 6 DCM, 1 VHD, 3 ICM, and others 2. Four patients were treated with CRT-P and 8 with CRT-D. VVI pacings were in 4 patients due to chronic AF. Six patients imporved their symptoms after CRT. Three patients died during follow-up periods (mean; 30 months). The causes of death were HF, cancer and pneumonia. Conclusion: We might consider the treatment of CRT for the extreme aged patients with severe HF.
