The production of a thermal positive ion (M+) from a polyatomic molecule (MX) incident upon a heated metal surface is investigated theoretically as a function of surface temperature (<I>T</I>). The quantitative expression of the ion emission current (<I>i</I>+) of M+ at a constant incident flux (<I>N</I>) of MX is found to change according to the condition whether the work function (φ) of the surface is higher or lower than the first ionization energy (<I>I</I>) of M and also to the degree of dissociation (γ) of MX on the surface. Namely,<BR>(<U>Remark: Graphics omitted.</U>)<BR>Here <I>D</I> is the bond dissociation energy of MX and <I>K</I>′s are virtually independent of <I>T</I>. In any other cases <I>i</I>+ cannot be expressed in such a simple form. The particular temperature regions corresponding to γ≈1 or γ<<1 are evaluated for given sets of <I>N</I>, <I>D</I>, <I>I</I>, and φ.
