The extraction of copper(II) was carried out with lipoic acid in benzene at 25 °C and at a constant ionic strength in the aqueous phase: 0.1 mol dm<SUP>−3</SUP> (NaNO<SUB>3</SUB>). The partition constant, <I>K</I><SUB>D,HA</SUB> of lipoic acid between benzene and water, and the dimerization constant, <I>K</I><SUB>2,HA</SUB> of lipoic acid in benzene were determined: log<I>K</I><SUB>D,HA</SUB>=1.17 and log<I>K</I><SUB>2,HA</SUB>=2.51 The dimeric copper(II) lipoate is responsible for the extraction:<BR>2Cu<SUP>2+</SUP>+3(HA)<SUB>2,o</SUB>\overset<I>K</I><SUB>ex(22)</SUB>\rightleftharpoons(Cu<SUB>2</SUB>A<SUB>4</SUB>(HA)<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>o</SUB>+4H<SUP>+</SUP><BR>with the extraction constant, log<I>K</I><SUB>ex(22)</SUB>=−11.00. It was proved that lipoate ion coordinates to copper(II) with the carboxylate group without a remarkable participation of the disulfide moiety in the coordination.
