The oxidation of C<SUB>2</SUB>H<SUB>2</SUB> in fuel-rich mixtures was studied in the temperature range 1600–2500 K by a shock-tube technique combined with UV absorption spectroscopy. The absorption profile, attributed to both an increase of C<SUB>4</SUB>H<SUB>2</SUB> and a decrease of C<SUB>2</SUB>H<SUB>2</SUB>, could be modeled with a reaction mechanism comprising 38 elementary reactions. The progress of the oxidation was found to be greatly influenced by the pyrolysis steps of C<SUB>2</SUB>H<SUB>2</SUB>.
