Calcium atoms are thought to be inserted into E–E′ bonds of group 4B catenates, Me<SUB>3</SUB>E–E′Me<SUB>2</SUB>R (E, E′=Si, Ge, Sn; R=Me, Cl) to give the corresponding Me<SUB>3</SUB>E–Ca–E′Me<SUB>2</SUB>R compounds.
