• The preparation of <I>N</I>-acyl derivatives of α-amino-α-benzylmercaptopropionic acid was investigated. It is described that pyruvic acid was treated with amides to afford <I>N</I>-acyl-α-amino-α-hydroxypropionic acids, which were then substituted into <I>N</I>-acyl-α-amino-α-benzylmercaptopropionic acids. In another experiment, Steglich's method was improved in order to afford three <I>N</I>-acyl derivatives of α-amino-α-benzylmercaptopropionic acid in a better yield.
