Two new macrocyclic compounds, I and II, which incorporate, respectively, four or eight benzene rings and intervening methylene bridges attached to their <I>para</I> positions, were synthesized. The UV, IR, and NMR spectra of these paracyclophanes were compared with a corresponding open-chain compound, III.
