The Wurtz reaction has been found to be catalyzed by easily removable tetrakis(<I>p</I>-dimethylaminophenyl)ethylene. This modification facilitated the separation of products in the syntheses of [2.1.2.1.]-, [2.2.2.2]-, and [3.2.3.2]paracyclophanes, the isolated yields of which were better than in the case of tetraphenylethylene.
