The electrochemical fluorination of carbonyl sulfide has been carried out. Garbonyl fluoride and sulfur hexafluoride were obtained as the principal products. The influence of the operating conditions on the reaction has been examined. In addition, a method has been developed for the production of sulfur hexafluoride. This involves the passage of carbon monoxide and sulfur over a catalyst; the resultant gas formed is subsequently introduced into a current-carrying anhydrous hydrogen fluoride in an electrolytic cell. Sulfur hexafluoride was thus obtained in a good yield.
