The reaction between CoWO<SUB>4</SUB> and chlorine proceeds above about 585 °C to form WO<SUB>2</SUB>Cl<SUB>2</SUB> and CoCl<SUB>2</SUB>. In the presence of carbon, the reaction proceeds above about 345 °C to form CoCl<SUB>2</SUB> and WO<SUB>3</SUB>, the WO<SUB>3</SUB> subsequently reacts with chlorine to form WO<SUB>2</SUB>Cl<SUB>2</SUB> and WOCl<SUB>4</SUB>.
