Compared to the close and extensive studies by many investigators on the adrenal glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids and gonadal steroid hormones, it has still more to be explored as to the adrenal androgens.<BR>We will summarize our own studies which we have been doing especially in respect to the nature and the significance of human adranal androgens - C-19 androgens and related steroids -, using mainly gaschromatographic analysis, and report them under the following items.<BR>1) Gaschromatographic and gas-mass spectrometric identification of C-19 androgens and other related steroids in the human adrenal vein blood with special emphasis on Δ<SUP>5</SUP> - 3β-OH steroid sulfates and the proof of definite differences between them and those in the human spermatic vein blood.<BR>2) Clinical usefulness of the determination of peripheral plasma DHEA sulfate by our revised gaschromatographic determination method as a reliable index of adrenal androgen secretion with particular stress on the definite changes in puberty and advanced age as well as in patients with pituitary-adrenocortical disorders.<BR>3) Existence of the specific qualitative species differences in adrenal androgens among human, monkeys, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and rats.<BR>4) Regulatory mechanism of the adrenal androgens secretion.<BR>5) Physiological significance of the adrenal androgens and their clinical applications.
