Influence of schizophyllan (SPG) on bactericidal and lysozyme-like activities of animal serum was examined.<BR>1) There was no difference in bactericidal action between the serum of SPG-treated mice and that of control mice.<BR>2) Some increase of bactericidal action on<I>Escherichia coli</I>was seen, when the serum of SPG-treated mice was mixed with gentamicin. However, the serum of control animals also showed similar tendency.<BR>3) After SPG-treated mice were injected intraperitoneally with gentamicin, bactericidal activity was compared with that of control mice treated in the same way. No difference of the activity could, however, be recognized between them.<BR>4) The lysozyme activity of the sera of SPG-treated rabbits were estimated at intervals. Almost no increase or decrease of lysozyme levels could be observed. These results suggest that the protective activity of SPG against various experimental infections are due to the nonspecific activation of cellular immunity, but not due to the stimulation of humoral bactericidal factors.
