Both local and systemic immune responses were demonstrated in mice intratracheally infected with <I>B. pertussis.</I> Passive protection was assayed by the ability of bronchial washings and sera to protect mice from lethal intracerebral infection. Active immunity in intratracheally inoculated mice was directly assayed by the intracerebral challenge.<BR>1) Passive protection was observed in bronchial washings collected 2 or 3 weeks after the intratracheal infection, suggesting the temporal appearence of local immunity. On the other hand, the protective activity of sera was maintained for a longer period of time.<BR>2) Active immunity against intracerebral challenge became detectable 2 or 3 weeks after the intratracheal infection, and very strong protection was demonstrated at 4 and 5 weeks.<BR>3) By the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis reaction, the formation of an IgE-like antibody, specific for <I>B. pertussis, </I> was detected in sera of mice, past the range of 5-10 weeks after infection.
