Rare Malignancies of the Larynx; A Report of Three Cases.

Three rare malignancies of the larynx (primary oat cell carcinoma, malignant lymphoma, pseudosarcomatous squamous cell carcinoma) are reported with a review of the literature.Case 1 was in a 58-year-old male diagnosed with primary oat cell carcinoma of the larynx which was treated with total laryngectomy and left radical neck dissection after preoperative radiation. The patient cuffed of widespread metastases nine month later. Case 2 was in a 72-year-old female diagnosed with non-Hodgkin diffuse lymphoma of mixed cell type and was controlled by radiation (50Gy), but she died of mediastinal recurrence 1 year and two month later in spite of combined chemotherapy (B-COP). Case 3 was in a 50-year-old male with pseudosarcomatous squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx and has been controlled by total laryngectomy for 3 years.In these rare tumors of the larynx, the pathological diagnoses was difficult to make from specimens obtained by microlaryngeal surgery. The histopathological diagnosis of laryngeal oat cell carcinoma was confirmed by electron microscopy. The diagnosis of malignant lymphoma was finally obtained by exploratory laryngofissure after failure of repeated endoscopic biopies. In case 3, the diagnosis was corrected to pseudosarcomatous squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx after the total laryngectomy, from that of malignant fibrous histiocytoma obtained by endoscopic biopsy.The prognosis of these tumors were also varied, that is, that of primary oat cell carcinoma of the larynx was extremely poor in spite of the intensive systemic therapy, while those of malignant lymphoma and pseudosarcomatous squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx were fairly good although they require intensive investigations and long-term followup.
