Effect of S-carboxymethylcysteine on nasal mucociliary clearance and viscoelasticity of nasal mucus in chronic sinusitis.

This study evaluates the effects of S-carboxymethylcysteine (SCMC) on both nasal mucociliary clearance and viscoelastic properties of nasal mucus in adult patients with chronic sinusitis. SCMC was administered in a dose of 1500mg/day orally for four weeks. Nasal mucociliary clearance and nasal mucus were examined before (week 0) and four weeks after the start of the administration (week 4).Nasal mucociliary clearance (ST) was determined by the saccharin method. At week 0, ST was within the normal range in 15 patients, and was retarded in 12 patients. At week 4, ST was significantly faster than at week 0 in the patients whose ST was retarded before the treatment (p<0.05).The elasticity (G') and viscosity (η') of each specimen of nasal mucus wercdetermined by an oscillating sphere magnetic rheometer at frequencies of 0.5, 1, 5, 10 and 20Hz at a constant temperature of 25°C. Nosignificant difference was observed in either G' or η' between week 0 and week 4.It was concluded that in patients with chronic sinusitis(1)SCMC can improve the reduced nasal mucociliary clearance and(2)SCMC has no effect on reducing the viscoelasticity of the nasal mucus.
