We conducted a comparative study of diagnoses based on clinical histories and on histories plus examinations in a population of 426 patients who visited the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of Gifu University during the calendar year 1980. The percentages of diagnoses based on clinical histories were 91% for Meniere's disease, 82 % for vestibular Meniere's disease, 58% for vestibular neuronitis, 90% for sudden deafness, 90% for benign paroxymal positional vertigo, 100% for delayed hydrops, 100% for inner ear circulation insufficiency, 100% for otogenic labyrinthitis, 100% for labyrinthine vertigo following trauma of the head or neck, 100% for Hunt syndrome, 80% for streptomycin intoxication, and 100% for Harada's disease. Thus, the rates of diagnosis of inner ear vertigo from clinical histories were 90% or more except for vestibular neuronitis, vestibular Meniere's disease and streptomycin intoxication. Obtaining the patient's clinical history in detail is very important in the diagnosis of vertigo.
