Development of Fire Retarding Substances Processing Technique by Using Molten Slag:—Basic Examination of the Reaction Rate to Oxygen Concentration and Temperature—

We have proposed a new processing technique for fire retarding substances which are considered low level radioactive wastes. In this study, fire retarding substances are put on the molten slag. The ash, generated at the surface of fire retarding substances, dissolved into melt which promoted the surface combustion of the fixed carbon. This technology is referred as to"the slag fluidized bed technique". Mass time changes for the two different types of substances were measured under various ambient temperatures and oxygen concentrations. Then, the new technique was compared with the conventional one. Based on the coal combustion theory, the reaction rate equations of the fixed carbon were reffered to. We determined some constants in the equations so as to simulate precisely the mass time change obtained by the examination. By using these constants, the combustion mechanism of the fixed carbon in the slag fluidized bed process was discussed quantitatively. The main results are shown below.<BR>In the air combustion technique, the processing time for the fixed carbon tended to be influenced by the experimental conditions. Especially, it became longer under low oxygen concentration. On the other hand, in the slag fluidized bed technique, the processing time of the fixed carbon was comparatively shorter and depended only slightly on experimental conditions.<BR>Numerical calculation for the combustion mechanism of the fixed carbon revealed that in air combustion, the reaction rate of the fixed carbon was constrained by the diffusion of the oxygen through the ash layer. On the contrary, in the slag fluidized bed process, the combustion rate became larger due to the frequent contacts between the fixed carbon and air by the removal of ash with the molten slag. The size reduction of combusting substances resulting from ash removal also accelerated the reaction.
