A Study on the Behavior of Temperature and Microwave Absorption on the Dehydrochlorination of Poly (Vinyl Chloride : PVC) by Microwave Irradiation

Temperature dependency on microwave absorption of PVC polymer was studied in this paper. The following results unfolded: (1) The temperature of PVC was gradually picked up by the absorbing microwave, and a quick temperature rise (Thermal Runaway: TR) occurred according to an abrupt change in absorption efficiency of microwave energy; (2) The temperature of TR (TRT) was dependent on the conditions of irradiation. The higher the irradiation power and the temperature before irradiation, the higher were the results of the TR; (3) Pre-heating of PVC caused a shorter irradiation time for dehydrochlorination using the microwave method; (4) During TR, the rate of microwave absorption kept to a high level and decreased after the temperature reached the maximum; (5) Calculations on energy balance showed that 4% of irradiated power is absorbed and 23% of absorbed energy is used for dehydrochlorination.
