An experimental study of the deformities of femoral head in congenital dislocation of the hip.

The purpose of this experimental investigation is to study on the Perthes-like lesion as a complication of reduction of congenital dislocation of the hip. One hundred and twenty rabbits, approximately 5-10 days of age, were used for this work. The femoral head of rabbits were exposed by lateral approach under local anesthesia and pressed with mosquit Péan's forceps and followed for three weeks. Autopsy materials were examined histologically. As a result of this study the following conclusions were reached: 1. The femoral head of newborn baby and congenital dislocation of the hip is more vulneable to trauma because the epiphysis of them is still consist of cartilage. 2. Trauma to the femoral head caused damage not only to the epiphysis but also growth plate. 3. Only one chance of trauma to the femoral head caused permanent deformity 4. Trauma could not be excluded as a factor concernig pathogenesis of Perthes-like lesion.
