It is generally accepted that bone blood flow is controlled by neural mechanisms, probably involving sympathetic vasomotor nerves. In this paper, the effect of sympathectomy on bone blood flow was studied using hydrogen washout techneque. Eight New Zealand white rabbits were anesthetized and their right lumbar sympathetic trunks were identified. Bone blood flow rates were measured before and after right lumbar sympathectomy. 10, 20 and 30 minutes after sympathectomy, the average bone blood flow of the sympathectomized side (right distal tibia) was not increased but decreased (about 20%). Next, using two rabbits, the effect of sympathetic nerve stimulation on bone blood flow was studied. During right lumbar sympathetic trunks were stimulated, bone blood flows of the right tibiae decreased remarkably.
