A 60-year-old man was hospitalized for a painless mass in the upper sternal area of six months duration.Roentgenograms showed a markedly destructive lesion, involving the upper part of the sternum.An open biopsy of the tumor revealed moderately differentiated chodrosarcoma.Operation was performed in Feburuary 1985, the upper four-fifths of the sternum and anterior portions of the second, third, fourth and fifth ribs (bone and costal cartilage) were removed bilaterally.The resulting large defect of the thoracic wall was reconstructed with tibial, iliac and split-rib grafts.
